Two summers ago, when we moved to our current apartment, we opted to get a place without air conditioning. I’ll give you a minute to let that soak in.
There were a number of reasons why (heat is included with our rent, which saves us some serious change in the winter; the landlord allowed our pets; the space was ample; the location allowed us to keep all of our commuting/lifestyle habits in place…). Window units are not really an option because we are on the ground floor and we are a teensy bit paranoid about security with those things AND we have window-bars that prevent window units in several rooms.
Last summer was mild as can be. But this summer? Whoooo-wheeeee. It is warm.
When I tell people that I live without AC, I hear groans, moans, gasps and sympathy. But the fact is that in Chicago, it is really only GROSS and HUMID for about a month, maybe less. We have multiple fans that blow our hot air around, and that does help. We proudly support the frozen treat industry, whether those treats are quiescently frozen, slow-churned or otherwise. I am a loyalist to Jello Pudding Pops, but I also have a soft spot for rainbow sherbet, homemade juice popsicles and all manner of ice creams.
Dinner has reached new levels (read: lows) of non-cooking non-creativity. Cereal (this week: Raisin Bran Crunch). Salad (tonight: spinach, baby romaine, cucumber, onion, feta cheese and light caesar dressing). Sandwiches (turkey + swiss, peanut butter + banana + honey). The good news is that the farmers market is Thursday (YAY!) so I can stock up on fruits and berries and veggies. Also… I think it’s almost tomato time! There is no more perfect summer food than ripe, juicy tomatoes. I am perfectly happy to eat them sliced, then sprinkled with just the tiniest bit of salt and pepper. Will tomorrow be my lucky day? Will you be treated to some lovely, luscious tomato photos in the near future?
I guess all this is to say (for those who come here for recipes of banana cookies and homemade oreos and other yummy things): now is not the time for baking. It is a time for shredded salads and no-bake desserts. And lots of pudding pops.
