Hello! Let me tell you about me.
I live in the Midwest. I’m happily married to a lovable nerd. My red-headed son lights up my life. I have a hard time following recipes to the letter (a trait inherited from my mom). I earned a graduate degree in liberal arts because it sounded fun, and I wrote a play about Galileo for my thesis project. My pop culture preferences veer toward whimsy, science fiction, mystery and charm. And I read a lot, usually in the world of literary fiction, lifestyle blogs, memoirs and inspirational advice books.
I value kindness and courtesy. I think learning is a habit that should go far beyond school. I believe life is best lived when we seek pleasure in the small things, like hot fudge sundaes and phone calls with old friends.
In addition to this blog, I write and edit at Old Married Ladies and Positive365. Occasionally I send delightful email missives with interesting reads, funny gifs and brief anecdotes. You can sign up for that here.
Let’s talk business.
If you are curious about my day job: I work for an educational technology company, formerly (and formally) known as an academic publisher. My team puts together curriculum for college students who are learning about management, human resources, organization theory, leadership and other business-y things.
Before I moved back to my home town, I worked in the editorial department at Groupon. We sold group coupons, and I sometimes received work emails that said things like, “URGENT: NFL TOASTER/SANDWICH MAKER.” We had a cat in a space ship! The internet is a funny place to work.
In ancient history, I was a newspaper reporter. Writing news stories was fun and important work, but the schedule and pay were not fun. Then I moved to Chicago! For several years, I worked in medical communications and marketing. That means I wrote articles, press releases and web stories about doctors, patients, illnesses and treatments. That felt like important work, too. I edited and managed newsletters, magazines, brochures, posters and social media. Sometimes I gave out lunches to senior citizens at free health events.
If you’d like me to write or edit something for you, I might be interested! Writing is my jam.
